After Hou Yi shot the sun, many people worshipped him as a teacher. There was a man named Pang Meng, who was treacherous and greedy, and followed Hou Yi. One day, the Faery of the Kunlun Mountains gave Hou Yi a pill of elixir. It is said that people who take this medicine can not only live forever, but also become immortal. Hou Yi was unwilling to become an immortal by himself, so he gave the elixir to his wife Chang’e for safekeeping.

Pang Meng knew about this, and he wanted to get Hou Yi’s elixir. On the morning of Lunar August 15th, Hou Yi wanted to take his disciples out, but Pang Meng pretended to be ill and stayed. In the evening, Pang Meng, armed with a sword, could not wait to break into Hou Yi’s house and force Chang E to hand over the elixir. After several rounds, Pang Meng saw that Chang’e would not hand over the elixir, so he rummaged through the boxes and searched everywhere. Seeing the elixir was about to be found, Chang’e hurried forward, took out the elixir, and swallowed it.

Chang’e ate the elixir, and suddenly flew up in a fluttering way, flying over the window, over the countryside, flying higher and higher, all the way towards the moon.

Hou Yi returned from a trip, but his wife, Chang’e, was missing. He rushed out the door anxiously, only to see a bright moon in the sky, and his wife was standing beside a laurel tree, staring at him affectionately. Hou Yi called out, desperately chasing after the moon. But when he chased three steps forward, the moon took three steps back and couldn’t catch up.

The villagers miss the kind-hearted Chang’e very much, so they put Chang’e's favorite food in the yard and wished her from a distance.
